AI assistants ignore most businesses that rank well on Google
New data shows AI assistants recommend as few as 1% of locations that rank well in Google local search, a gap of up to 30 times. Here's what to do about it.
Ranking well on Google tells you almost nothing about whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity will ever recommend your business. A new study found that AI assistants recommend only a small fraction of the locations that perform well in traditional local search, with some sectors seeing a gap of up to 30 times. For multi-location brands and local businesses alike, this is the clearest evidence yet that Google visibility and AI visibility are now two separate games.
What changed?
SOCi analysed performance data from nearly 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands to measure how often locations are surfaced or recommended by AI assistants, according to Search Engine Land. The headline finding is stark: AI assistants recommend only 1% to 11% of locations, revealing a huge gap between Google rankings and AI visibility, as most brands performing well in traditional local search fail to appear in results from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
A separate synthesis of the same dataset puts a finer point on the numbers. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found AI platforms recommend only about 1.2% of locations on ChatGPT and 7.4% on Perplexity, compared with 35.9% visibility in Google's local 3-pack, according to Angarum Media's synthesis report.
The pattern holds across sectors but with different severity. In retail, only 45% of top traditional local search brands carried over into AI recommendations, according to SOCi's own analysis. In financial services the drop-off is harsher still: brands with profile accuracy issues, ratings near 3.4 stars and review response rates below 5% were effectively invisible in AI recommendations.
Why does this matter for your business?
This isn't a niche local SEO problem. It's evidence that the signals which win you a place in Google's local pack are not the same signals that win you a mention from an AI assistant. AI systems prioritise confidence and risk reduction over breadth, which makes them far more selective than a traditional ranking algorithm that happily lists ten options on a page.
Review quality turns out to be one of the clearest differentiators. Locations recommended by ChatGPT averaged 4.3 stars, a bar that many perfectly viable local businesses simply don't clear. In traditional local search, a business with an average rating can still rank on proximity and category relevance, but that leniency disappears once an AI assistant is making the call.
The behavioural shift behind this is already mainstream. SOCi's companion consumer survey found that 52% of US consumers used an AI tool to research a local business in the last 30 days, and 57% of US consumers who use AI assistants name ChatGPT as one they use for local information, making it the most-used AI assistant in the study, according to Search Engine Land. Over half of your prospective customers may now be asking an AI which business to choose before they ever see your website.
What makes this uncomfortable for marketing teams is the binary nature of the outcome. SOCi describes it this way: in AI-driven local discovery there is no page two, a multi-location brand location is either recommended or effectively invisible. There's no equivalent of ranking eighth on page one and still picking up incidental traffic. You're either on the shortlist an AI reads out, or you don't exist to that customer at all.
What should you do now?
The data points to a short list of fundamentals that actually move the needle, and none of them are exotic.
Fix the basics of profile accuracy first. The financial services brands that disappeared from AI recommendations didn't just have mediocre reviews, they had profile accuracy issues compounding the problem. If your business listings, hours, addresses and categories are inconsistent across platforms, that inconsistency reads to an AI system as unreliability.
Treat review response rate as a visibility lever, not a customer service afterthought. The brands that vanished from AI recommendations had review response rates below 5%. Responding to reviews, especially critical ones, appears to be a trust signal that AI systems weigh directly.
Don't assume Google performance is a proxy for AI performance. SOCi's methodology measured AI recommendation rates by asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to recommend 10 businesses for a given industry and market, counting a location as likely to be recommended if it appeared in the first five results, according to SOCi. Run that same exercise yourself for your own business and category. You may find you're well ranked on Google and nowhere in the AI answer.
Benchmark against your specific sector, not the average. The gap size varies hugely: in retail, only 45% of top traditional local search brands carried over into AI recommendations, while other categories fared worse, according to SOCi. Knowing your sector's baseline tells you how urgent the fix is.
This is the same dynamic we've tracked across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity all year: being easy to find isn't the same as being easy to cite or recommend, and the two now require genuinely different work. Frequently asked questions
Is this just a problem for big multi-location brands, or does it affect small local businesses too?
The SOCi study specifically measured multi-location enterprise brands, but the underlying mechanism, that AI assistants are far more selective than traditional search rankings, applies to any business competing for a local recommendation. Independent local businesses can actually benefit from this selectivity if their reviews and profile accuracy are strong, since AI systems reward consistency over sheer scale.
Why would an AI assistant recommend fewer businesses than a Google search results page?
A Google local pack or search results page can comfortably list ten or more options with little risk, because the user does the final filtering. An AI assistant giving a conversational answer has to pick a shortlist on the user's behalf, so it leans towards options it can defend with confidence, which in practice means stronger review scores and cleaner data.
Does having a strong Google Business Profile guarantee AI visibility?
No. The data shows a clear gap between Google ranking performance and AI recommendation rates across every sector studied, including retail and financial services. A strong Google profile is a useful foundation, but it isn't sufficient on its own.
What's the single highest-leverage fix for a multi-location brand right now?
Review response rate and rating consistency appear to carry the most weight. Brands with response rates below 5% and ratings near 3.4 stars were described as effectively invisible in AI recommendations, so improving both consistently across every location is likely to have the biggest short-term impact.
